Remote Oil Filter

I've searched around and found people taking about remote oil filter setup's, but can't seem to find any write up's or part numbers that were used.

I'd love to get my oil filter into a more accessible spot, and want to know how the guys who have done it, did it.

The 4.0 has one of the easiest oil filters to get to. Just stand on the tire if necessary. It's more work than it's worth IMHO.

Go try to get to the filter on a V8 Toyota motor or a newer Subaru boxer motor. Talk about a PITA!

My ex wife's 01 Sunfire had an oil filter that was jammed under the exhaust manifold and above the passenger axle. But I'm talking about my Jeep (97 4.0 Auto). Just because there are harder motors to access the filter on, doesn't mean it's not worth looking into making it easier to change the oil.

I run a remotely mounted Frantz oil filter. Check it out at www.wefilterit.com. It uses a roll of toilet paper. Definately old school.

the filter on mine is upside down..... gets my control arms covered in oil... plus with a remote mount you can run a oil cooler with a fan to help combat the heat issue we all battle with! i don't really see a down side....

I bought an oil cooler kit. It fits about 6 different vehicles, most of the relocation kits are the same way. As long as the filter base diameter pad is correct, it probably comes with a couple adapters to make it work. Summit carries them.

I ran a TransDapt remote kit on my 98 XJ. I got it off of eBay. Turned out the hoses weren't long enough, so I got some barb fittings and trans hose.

I mounted it on the passenger side inner fender, where the battery used to be. I used a Mobil 1 M-301 filter.

I have on back order a twin filter TransDapt remote kit ( http://www.jegs.com/i/Trans+Dapt/969/1213/10002/-1# ) and am looking at where to mount it. Would moving the battery to the inside back of the jeep to fit the relocation kit there be the best idea?

Johnnyc would you be able to post a picture of what yours looks like?

Sorry, I don't have the XJ anymore. But it was mounted on the inner fenderwell just ahead of where the cruise control servo would be.

These things are interesting. I really need relocation for my Miata though... you can't get to the filter without dropping the stone shield and sticking your hand in through the wheel well. The XJ isn't that easy either with a bigger than stock filter.

I don't think you want the battery inside unless it's a sealed one, and even then... There is lots of space in the engine bay

Definitely on this bandwagon, but like some of you other guys, where did you mount it? I have already built my stroker about to put the motor back in with new trans cooler and the remote filter mount will feed my oil cooler too. I know where the cooler is going but not sure where to mount the filter bracket.. Any ideas or pics? Thanks guys,

See Magus2727's posts in this thread: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1013652&highlight=remote+filter

He made a nice looking bracket, and posted a pic, but the link for the pic is no good anymore.

I have a new dual remote filter setup from Summit:

PM me if you are interested in buying it.

Sorry about the old link not working... I cant edit my posts for some reason... (even though i am a paying member) and NAXJA does not like linking from Jeepforum.com I guess...

As long as we're talking about hanging stuff off the oil-filter adapter, has anyone tried one of these oil-accumulators for pre-oiling the engine or a DIY variant of the same? Most people would get more benefit from this than having two filters.

Seems like you could plumb a hydraulic pump into a remote filter setup to pre-oil the engine before turning the key and then switch the pump off and use a valve to reroute the oil through the remote filter.

well, duh.

is it sad to say the main reason why I did the remote oil location setup was to easily have access to two locations to add sending units? I have a oil temp, and will have a aftermarket oil pressure also... and it will be easy to add a oil cooler if I ever feel the need.

The hottest my oil has gotten since installing the guage was 240 deg F (IIRC) I don't think that temp requires a cooler...

the dual filter was an added benefit, causing me to run 2 way over size filters taking my oil capacity to 8 quarts...

I used Fox shock remote reservoir to make an accumulator with a switch that releases the built up oil pressure when the key is on. Just above the washer bottle in this pic.
