Three foot piece of vinyl tubing. Use it to isolate the area the sound is coming from.

Mechanics stethoscope, wooden dowel, screwdriver also work but generally pick up to many harmonics for locating the source area. Once you have the general area, if necessary, then those three can help narrow things.
