I was worried when I heard that one justice was retiring, till I heard which one it is. It does not matter who he picks. Preferably a constitutionalist, but the balance will remain the same unless he picks a strict conservative.

I always thought that it was the president's sole responsibility to choose Supreme Court justices. When was it decided that oversight was needed? I know it's been a while, I remember when Bush was making picks, but just wondering when that happened?

Darky, you're correct...only the Prez has the power to nominate. That's not to say the process hasn't become so political that everyone weighs in and tries to manipulate the outcome.

Most presidents starting with Carter I think, heavily relied on suggestions from the ABA, Bush told them he did not want their influence because he found them to be biased. Obama has welcomed them back.

It should be the presidents decision, but many people will offer suggestions.
