While out crawling a few weeks ago the XJ overheated. I lost all power. It didnt want to move. I dont remember if the fan kicked on or not. Once I let it sit and cool the power returned.

Thermostat was replaced about a year ago.

Where do I start?

kinda sound like the jeep's running too rich.

when you revving the jeep, was there any black smoke coming out of the tailpipe?

Year and engine?

Stock cooling system?

OEM cooling system marginal for offroading. If the coolant mix is good, the pressure is good, you might consider the following:

Consider a manual command switch so you can run the electric fan when it is needed.

Consider an upgrade of the fan clutch to the HD zj style.

I'd check/verify fan clutch operation first. They are a common hardware failure.

What is the history of cooling system maintenance (flush/fill?). Gotta make sure basics are covered.
