I was replacing my brakes and I was doing a visible inspection of the u-joints.

When I rotated the hub, the shaft spun (of course), but there was about 1/4"-1/2" of play before I could hear it engage in the diff.

And If I rotated back and forth kind of quickly, I could hear it clanking inside the diff. I thought it was the u-joints being bad, but the axle shaft and stub shaft rotate at the same speed and there is no perceptible play between the two.

Does that make sense?

yes you make sense, my jeep do same thing, generally i wont worry as long as it dont make noises under normal use

Backlash in the ring and pinion.

Is this a serious problem that can cause damage?

Is this something someone who knows nothing about gears fix?

Junkyard fix?

If it is the backlash it can cause uneven wear on the teeth.

I would take the cover off if you can and see whats loose.
