replacing my u joints on my axles today and i got to looking at the rings on the outer shafts and to me they appear to be old worn out seals but before i knock them off i wanna make sure i'm not screwing up.

so am i right or are they something else?

its just a dust shield to keep big pieces from going inside the axle tube. it doesnt really seal any fluids out or in.

that's the hub side of the shaft-- just keeps grit and grime from entering the "sealed" bearing to prolong it's life a bit

Good luck getting them off, they are on there pretty good. I tried on some D44 shafts and I gave up.

I wouldn't worry about em. I'd suggest cleaning up the sockets where the u-joint caps sit with some steel wool and a little grease or antiseize. Makes getting the new caps in and the next changeout much easier. Might want to wirebrush those threads too.
