Tranny question...

Does anyone know if a 1997 transmission from a Grand Cherokee thats a AW4 23 spline will fit into a 97 Cherokee that already has an AW4 in it? Basically Im asking if the AW4 in the ZJ is the same AW4 in the XJ, like would it just be a bolt on type thing?

ZJ's had the aw4 to mid 93, and then went to the 42RE

.. so NO SOUP FOR YOU.

1997ZJ 4.0L A/T = 42RE, not AW4. 42RE < AW4.

(J/K - that seems to be a little known factoid, but it remains as fact. Yeah, you can probably put in the 42RE with a little work - but it's not a step up. A 47RE would be better - it's essentially an electronically-controlled A727 with overdrive added, but it's also not going to have an AMC bellhousing pattern. And you'll have to move electronics over. And, there's not much difference between the AW4 and 47RE, IMO. Even though the 47RE is better than the 42RE, it's still not equal to the old A727!)

And has a 23 spline output shaft. $200 OBO : 1997 Np249 Transfercase. 23 spline In put shaft. Part time and Full time 4x4. $150 OBO : 1987 Np231 Transfercase. 21 spline In put shaft. Part time 4x4 $100 OBO. : 1987 Dana 30 4x4 front axle. Uses vaccum system or can be taken off. Includes Rotors and Calipers. $150 OBO

thats the post from RaceDesert so I wasnt aware of the ZJ coming with an AW4 cause Im looking for a AW4 from a late model so I can do my swap..

Im trying too but everytime I find someone with the AW4 4wd from a 97 they never wanna sell it to me for some odd reason.... Im waiting on 76ANTHONY to hit up the junk yards with.. but man, the hard part of the whole swap is finding the parts!

It will work with other vehicles - it just needs to be bolted to a Chrysler LA-block engine, and not an AMC. V6-238, V8-318, V8-360, V10-488, V10-515
