Jumping while driving....

A few months ago, I replaced the CPS. Since then, and more so lately, my XJ stutters while driving, like the ignition is being turned off and on. The tach jumps as well. I checked the CPS, and it is still tight and plugged in.. I also have a major oil leak (did the rear main, oil pan and valve cover, think its the oil filter adapter). Could that be getting between the CPS and the sending unit? Please help!

I'd swap out the CPS again. New part does not equal good part. Your battery connections and grounds are all good, right?

The tach jumping and ignition miss makes me suspect a bad cam position sensor.

If your's is a later model, the sensor is under the distributor cap and is easily replaced.

Sorry, CPS (Cam Position Sensor) and CKS (Crank Position Sensor) can be easily confused. More often than not, it is the CranK position Sensor. (on the bell housing)

Is the wiring for the crank sensor maybe hitting the exhaust manifold?

'89 XJ. Thanx for the suggestions guys. Wife just got home while I was looking after the kids, so guess I'm in for another adventure on the way to work tommorrow. Check these things out tommorrow night.

i'd check your 02 sensors. Bad 02's will causing bucking/surging and tach spiking.
