Oil Question

OK, some of us were shootin the bull and debated OIL weights.

Now, does the oil thicken as it heats up or does it thin.

And as an example for viscosity numbers.........10 w 40.....will 40 be its COLD thicker weight and the 10 be its thinner hot weight?
Or is it the other way around?

The higher the number...the thicker? Lower thinner?

Thanks for the clarification.

Oil will thin as it heats. Ever try pouring oil when it's freezing out? You need a light, thin oil for sever cold so that the pump can actually move it.

The larger viscocity number means it's a thicker fluid at a given temperature. 30W pours relatively easily (like maple syrup) while 140W (gear lube) is almost like trying to pour a thick mud.

Synthetics are close but no matter the temp a 10W30 quart of mobil-1 will pour like it's at room temperature and that includes below freezing. The advantage of this is that the oil circulates faster on cold starts and builds pressure faster.
