Which axle set?

I can currently buy a d44/60 axle set out of a 78 F250, or a d44/60 set out of an 85 Jeep J-20. What are the differences in these axles? Which is the better set?

The ford is most likely a high pinion axle, therefore stronger than the low pinion J-20 D44.

Ford has 8 lug pattern, where as the J-20 has 6.

And unless you want to go really custom with a new T-case and all, you can't use the front J-20 D44 because it is a passenger drop diff.

An 85 J20 should be a driver side drop; my 83 Cherokee WT (same axle width as a J truck)was.

Fords. The front will be a HP with thinker tubes and flat top knuckles. The 60 will be a full floater most likely a 30 spline. they also should have 4.10 gears
