rear defrost light on when brake is applied?

The other day I noticed my interior light would not come when I opened the rear hatch. So I figured I just need to depress the switch. Well I pressed it and still no light. Last night I noticed now that when I put my brakes on, the rear defrost indicator light comes on.

My question is what should I look at first? The latch switch, light switch, or start digging into wires? Any help to save a little time and headache would be appreciated.

what year is the jeep? ifit has the 3rd brake light, maybe the wiring is chaffed where the harness runs through to the liftgate in the rubber boot.

It's probably what jneary said, but check your fuses too. Sometimes a blown fuse causes weird electrical feedback.
