Hawse fairlead use...wire?

I want to gain a little approach by replacing the roller with a hawse fairlead. I'm wondering if anyone has done it using cable without negative effects.
It would only be used a couple of times untill I can afford synthetic.

a lot of people use steel hawses with steel cable.
You should use a new aluminum hawse with synthetic, the steel ones can rust and chew up your synthetic.

Ok, so instead of spending money on a steel hawse (limited selection anyway) I decided to pick up some synthetic and an aluminum hawse from Master Pull. My cable was crap after one season. It had all kinds of kinks and wouldn't wind up correctly.

This stuff should be a breeze to work with.
