Tuff country steel shims

Re: http://www.suspensionconnection.com/cgi-bin/suscon/90012.html

just note that stock center pins are 5/16, so if you plan on using those, you're going to have to enlarge the holes in the leafs.

why not go over 2*? i know plenty of people (myself included) that run 4* shims.... as long as they're steel it's fine... correct?

Re: http://www.suspensionconnection.com/cgi-bin/suscon/90012.html

I have RE springs(3/8 center pins)already.....
These are listed as 2" wide x 2degrees but on tuff countries site they are listed as 2.5" wide.I wonder if this will be a problem if they are indeed 2" wide? Will they cause my leaves to shift or anything like that?

And.....

why not over 2*???

Re: http://www.suspensionconnection.com/cgi-bin/suscon/90012.html

going over 2* "can" be bad not saying it will but it can. after 2* the center pin for the leaf spring is no grabbing much and could cause your leafs to become misaligned. that is where things start to happen. i have seen the shims come out and cause all kinds of problems. i do have to say my experience is in jeepspeed and not crawling so this may not affect you. her at our shop anything over 2* we suggest rolling the perches to gain the right D/S angle.

Re: http://www.suspensionconnection.com/cgi-bin/suscon/90012.html

makes sense... but honestly not something i worry about too much. i will say that getting shims that become part of the pack and don't just slide under make a significant difference, especially in terms of center pin engagement.

what are your thoughts on welding a shim to the perch? just playing devil's advocate here... not actually going to do it.

I'm thinking of a RE 3.5" leaf pack kit, and since I'm poor (no sye at the moment) and don't want a tc drop (I'd lose some of the clearance I spent a lot of $$ to get), so what's the best way to keep the shim and leafs together?

Also, any ideas on what degree of shim I'll need?
Thanks,
Matt
1996 XJ, mostly stock. Right now saggy 2" AAL bb

clamp the leafs together from the top and the sides, take out the center pin, put the new center pin and shim in and tighten.

you'll probably need a 2*, maybe a 4* it's hard to say without just doing it and measuring

The RE Degree Shims are steel and include new center pins to make them part of your spring pack. Kinda funny though, they don't even have a 2* listed, just 4, 6, and 8*.
