i broke the top part of it and need to find out what its called it comes from the top of the thermo housing and splits into the heater core

When looking at a JY the valves from early 90's dodge caravan's are the exact same.

Or if it really bugs you to have one...I got one from a junkyard for a few dollars.

If you delete the valve you will have heat to the core all summer long. That may work ok in Crawlorado, but not so much further south. It will fight with the A/C and reduce it's effectiveness when you really need it.
Valves can be had at most auto parts houses.

Later model XJ's came without the valve from the factory.

New cars don't have that valve anymore, even in Florida and Texas.

Replace it. They were a weak link but I'd keep my system occupied with one.
