can someone tell me how many splines are on the input side of a np231 that came out of a 95 yj with a 2.5 and the ax5?

would this be worth swapping with my 99xj's np231?

I may be wrong here but I though jeeps were all 23 spline

you're right. I think 95 was the break over year between 21 and 23. Your 99 is a 23 spline AW-4. So if the new/replacement 231 is out of the truck, count the input splines. If 23 then go for it...
This of course assuming your 231 has some issues if you're going to replace it? Or the YJ 231 has an upgrade to make it more desirble?
What exactly is the goal up swapping them?

I am have read and confirmed on a few jeeps that the 4cyl TC cases are 21 spline. And the 6cyl up to 1990 were 21 also, with the 91 and newer 6cyl being 23 spline.
