I just installed a tachometer. Trying to set the number of cyliders on it. It is reading about 1200 rpm. Seems high to me for idle. What should a '94 with a 4.0 idle at? Thanks.

My 90 idles fine and smooth at around 800

I know 98-99 usually run around 730-770rpm.... At least thats what mine an the other 3 I work on run at.....

Should be between 700 and 750 +/- all years.

I'm thinking 700-750 in Park as well - but your VECI label underhood should have that little datum for you...

If you do have a high idle and 1200 is definitely too high, the first thing to suspect is a vacuum leak.

I don't think I have a leak quite yet. I need to calibrate my tach first. It's an aftermarket tach so you have to set it for the number of cylinders. I think it is set for 4 cyls right now. That would have it measuring 1.5x as many rpms. So 750 x 1.5 = 1125rpm. I'll try to calibrate and report back.

I thought the AX15's were 700-750 and the AW4's were 850-900...maybe?

Best way to check would be with an O-scope

Ok, I think I have the tach set right now. It's idling at approx. 750rpm. Thanks ya'll.
