Will a set of rims from a 99 Grand Cherokee fit my 99XJ or is the bolt pattern bigger? I thought I had heard this at one time, but just wanted to have someone's backup with a yes or no.

Wrong.
A 99 (WJ) is a 5 on 5" bolt pattern
You need a 5 on 4.5" a ZJ wheel will work for you (93 - 98 Grand Cherokee)

For the price, you might be better off just buying some aftermarket wheels.

I can get a set free and the tires are less than a year old so it's hard to let go. On the hopes of not sounding totally clueless, what's the easiest way to go to a 5x5 bolt pattern? Do the GC's have say a 8.25 rear that you could possibly swap the shafts and so forth to the XJ? I've thought about entertaining the idea if it wasn't going to be an above average expensive swap. I do like some of the new rims although 17's may have some clearance issues on an older stock suspension.

Wheel adapter will be cheapest way, maybe try selling or trading your aquired wheels/tires?
