Hi All,
I found out I had a cracked exhaust manifold after attempting to smog my '94 XJ (4.0L) so I could register it in CA. It ran decently for about 3 years (with a NM registration) with a small exhaust leak that never really gave me any trouble. No CELs, no reliability issues, just a slight hiccup in the idle every 20 seconds or so.
I bought a banks header after finding a pretty good price on one, and set about the job of installing the thing. As it always goes, I had put the whole thing back together and I was tightening the the stud closest to the firewall when it broke. After a look of disbelief, I took the whole thing apart and tried to remove the broken part. I failed and decided to pull the head.
I pulled the head, took it to a machine shop for a once over and to remove the broken stud. The head looked good, so I gathered all the parts I'd need and put it all back together. In the process I snapped off the temperature sending sensor, but I thought I could just replace it later. At this point I just needed my car to run. I replaced both studs and put the new manifold on, reconnected all the electrical and vacuum lines. I also replaced the upstream O2 sensor with a Bosch from Autozone.
I started it up and it seemed to run smoother, and a heck of a lot quietter without that pesky leak, but it keeps throwing code 51 every time I drive it. The CEL seems to come on when the engine is warmed up, no matter what load I put on the engine, or speed I drive, although it's hard to tell because of that broken temperature sender.
I checked for vacuum leaks, and rechecked the manifolds for an exhaust leak. I'm pretty stumped; any thoughts? I'm thinking about checking the fuel pressure, but I don't see how that could suddenly not work when it ran so well for so long.
Thank you,
Skyler
