An email I got, my grandfather had forwarded it to me... I thought it was interesting, at least. I don't know if it's been linked to on here already or not, but just figured I'd take a minute to post it and see what everyone thought...

I found this an interesting, but extremly disturbing article concerning Obama's proposition of a National Youth Corps. You will note when reading the article that the words "Mandatory" and "Compulsatory" are used. In effect it is a "Drafting" of young people between the ages of 18-25 into a state controlled socialist-model of "work and security" programs. I'm providing the link below. Be sure to pass this on to your friends, because this will affect their grandchildren.

There are (2) embedded videos to watch...the site may come up slow for you.....but do take the time to read and watch. We as Americans should be alert as to what may come!

im 19, i would be "required" to participate in this "common experience"

i think its bull$h!t.

if the program was voluntary i think they would have more success. but requiring my self and all of my peers to to just drop our lives for three months and be taken to a traing camp is absolutle crap to me.

does anyone here support this idea? if you do, PLEASE tell me why. i'd like to get another perspective on this.

Yeah, that's more or less the reason I posted it. Just seemed pretty outrageous to me, I don't know... I'm not one to be huge into politics and whatnot, so there may be something I'm missing. Or maybe Obama is just ridiculous?

You'd probably be sent to Gitmo or a gas chamber...:dunno:

EDIT: My apologies if this offends anyone, but I'm just trying to illustrate the stupidity of the "Socialist Ideal"

Agreed again :)

1st I didn't read the article.

But from the scuttlebutt I have heard it sounds like a CCC or WPA program that President Roosevelt instituted to get this country out of the Depression mixed with VISTA & Peace Corps from President Kennedy. I don't see it as Hitler youth nor becoming a citizen ala Starship Troopers.

It looks like a better alternative to standing around on the corner hoping to make it in the NBA or on Mom's living room sofa playing Xbox 360.

As I read it, I got the impression of it being a forced training camp, more or less, to cram down your throat what you are *supposed* to be in order to be a "good" American, very socialist-like as far as I can see... which is why I posted it here, to see if anyone could point out the reasons it would indeed be a necessary program... So far however... (n)

It doesn't matter how "good" this program could be for the US, it's a matter of the fact that it's REQUIRED. That goes directly against the entire reason this country was founded which was FREEDOM. And you don't have it when the government starts forcing you to do dumb sh*t like this. Chances are the logististics could NEVER be worked out and it could NEVER be a successful program, but the fact that they are trying just goes to show their own stupidity. It's the same as the old saying goes, "ya can't legislate morality". And you can't legislate being a "good" citizen either. Nor can you criminalize stupidity (unfortunately :(). What happened to prohibition? I'm guessing something similar but on a bigger scale would happen if this actually gets legislated.

You're correct...let's just bring back the draft.

EDIT: Nevermind, this is so awesome, it deserves its own post...

You may not be able to legislate morality or "good citizenship", but it sure as hell wouldn't hurt to get the citizens of this country to help out and support it a bit. I may not agree 100% with the structure of this program, but I don't see how it differs from having to go to school until you're 18. Make it a part of the educational process.

making it a part of the educational process would be one thing. but a post-primary-education training camp is far from another 2 or 3 elective/government/english/history (etc) credits required to get your deploma. and all of a sudden telling me to up and leave my job (when they are getting harder and harder to come by) and my family to do 3 months of jumping jacks for the flag is crazy.

is the fact of the matter that the youth of the nation cant support the country without becoming a G.I. after graduating high school? hmmm...

Barracks and PT dont make you an American.

No, I really don't think that spending a few months doing jumping jacks is really too much to ask. For a lot of people, it'd do them good. I'm not sure how it could hurt to give Americans a taste of PT and give them a course on how to defend themselves/USA in case of crisis. It'd come in handy for the personal life, too.

Plus, if it was mandatory, the job issue is moot. I imagine it'd be similar to jury duty.

At any rate, I think all students should be required to do community service work.

YOU'RE COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT!

It's not about whether or not it's "too much to ask" or that it "would do them good", it's the fact that it's MANDATED. I don't care how beneficial it would be "for the personal life" or even for the country, things like this CANNOT BE LEGISLATED. And if you really, honestly think that it should be, then maybe you should move to a more socialist country like those in Europe. In the meantime, America will keep it's liberty and freedom.

edit: Give up before I get REALLY mad ;)

Easy, purp.

I'm not sure I see the difference between this program and mandatory education. Or this and mandatory Social Security taxes.

Also, if my personal opinions differ from yours then I need to move to a more socialistic country? What about the "liberty and freedom" to my own opinions?

Oh, I see.

So it's ridiculous to mandate that people protect their own freedoms and liberties by making them undergo 3 months of civil service? What'll happen if we ever run out of volunteers?

Again, though, how is this any different than mandated education or mandated social security taxes?

edit: or at the very least, arm the American population with basic skills and know-how in case the sh*t hits the fan?
