xj starts then dies

i just picked up an 89 xj and it starts then dies withen a few seconds. i by passed ballast resistor and replaced fuel pump relay. what should i look for

try opening the idle intake on the throttle body unless yours is carborated which it probably is i just dont know when that changed. hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

Kind of old fashioned, but it could be a plugged exhaust.

Remove one sparkplug, ground the plug wire to prevent possible damage to the electronics, and start the engine.

It will make a hell of a racket, but if it keeps running you need to check the exhaust for restriction.

Check your fuel pressure with a gauge on the fuel rail... Should be 31 pounds with the vacuum line on the fuel regulator.

its running had to replace fuel pump. thanks for the help. about the other post it was after an 18 pack... sorry
