Stupid speedo gear

I just got done doing the ford 8.8 swap to my 88xj and I am trying to install a new speedo gear. I went from the stock to a 37 tooth gear with my 32 inch tires. I cannot for the life of me get the gear in at the right clocking position. I have had it in at every spot and still no speedometer. For the heck of it, I put the original speedo back in and it worked just fine. The shafts are both the same size and there are no problems with my speed control cable. Any advice? Thanks

i had trouble also. i ended up just putting two small washers on the gear shaft then sliding it into the housing. it was enough to keep it constantly meshed.

I just rotate the gear housing clockwise until it engages and then back off until the retaining fork will full into the slots.
