No need if you have the right bearing remover and press. Can't remember what the style is called but it's the two wedges with large threaded rods to tighten the halves up. Put an .031" under the pinion bearing and it will be very close, if it needs to be adjusted the remover will take the bearing back off with zero damage.
Of course, the carrier bearings on an 8.8 are adjusted outside the bearing, not underneath so that's not an issue.
