Winch clutch lever--not in use

I'm new to owning a winch, and while I've read the winch manuals of several manufacturers, I can't find anywhere where it states how the clutch should be positioned when it's not in use. Do I leave it in the engaged or disengaged position when it's not being used?

Leave it engaged. If you leave it disengaged the cable can unspool. JIM.
