I did a search and most of the results covered the 231...

I have a 242 and am either doing the SYE or a hack and tap. Can I use a XJ front driveshaft with the spicer flange still?

Yes you can use the front DS and spicer flange with the 242.

Does the axle matter though? The D35 requires an extra 1" of driveshaft length compared to the 8 1/4. Can you cut the output shaft longer to compensate?

I ran 5.5" of lift with my D35. I used a HnT and front DS. The front driveshaft with the spicer flange was plenty long.
