Chryco 8.25 27 splines

I finally managed to get rid of my D35 (trac lok, 4,56) and I have an option to buy Cryco 8.25, but with 27 splined. Is it worth to buy new gears and lunchbox for it? Or should I look only for 29 splined version? It will run with 31" tyres max... for mild offroad, no rocks, lots of highway driving .....

any info will be apreciated!

Thanks alot for any input

IMHO if you are only going to run 31s it will be fine, and lunchbox lockers are cheaper for the 27 sp. If you ever plan to go bigger look for a 29, but I've seen 27s hold up fine on 33s.

If you're going to get new gears and a locker anyway, you could convert it to 29-spline with new shafts and a new carrier. Even if you leave it 27-spline, though, you should be fine on 31s.

You mean that the housing is the same? If it direct swap? Just put in new shafts and carrier? (open/detroit/arb)?
Correcto.

I wouldn't mess with the 27 spline stuff. You wouldn't be gaining much strength over the D35.

This kinda goes along with the initial question.

Can anyone actually tell me the difference in strength that 2 splines will make, or even 3 for that matter if a D44 was used?

Now if we were talking a coarse splined axle in the neighborhood of 19 splines, I could see a larger difference, but we're talking 27 versus 29.

I intend on running 35s on my 27 spline 8.25

I'm not looking for the "well it has to be better cause it has more splines" answer. I'm looking for something useful to make me want to "upgrade" by two splines.

higher spline count= larger diameter shafts

Correcto.

Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01

Just for the sake of comparison:
Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89
Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01

WOW this is depressing to me... I thought my 8.25 was a big improvement over the D35 in my old '88 XJ. I know the ring gear and housing are stronger, but I would expect that the most common breaking point is the axle shaft, and there is no improvement in that respect. Crap.

The 29 spline version is still stronger than a Dturdy5 though, FYI.

Ive seen a 27 spline 8.25, locked, been perty abused on 33's, without breakage, yet. Its just the luck of the draw.

For further comparison:

D44 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, and 2.75" tubes, 30 spline

Larger diameter doesn't always mean more splines

GM 10 bolt 1.285" diameter shaft, 8.5" ring gear, 3" tubes, and 28 or 30 splines.

Now here's the kicker, which is heat treated better? On the Rockwell Hardness scale, which is harder?

The 8.25 is an improvement over the 35, in the thickness of the tubes, they're all non-c-clip, and in a bigger ring and pinion.

If the opportunity presents itself to upgrade all at once to the 29 splines, I might do it, but .04" and 2 splines is not worth it to me right now.

8.25 is a C-clip axle

The axle tubes are going to be alot of your strength with the 8.25. Those puny D35 axle tubes are more prone to flex which will really up the chances of a breaking an axle IMO.

so does that mean all 89s dana 35s were non c clip

I myself ran a 27 spline on 35" muds locked..all over MOAB twice ..on runs that were rated 4+.. never broke ..idid nt slam the skinny pedal alot..but I also carried a spare .....

jsut my 2cents

I AGREE totally
