1) by looking at the side of the shackle
2) I believe 45* would be preferable, with the end of the shackle behind the point where to top mounts to the body.

30-45 degrees,don't cut the box, buy a boomerang shackle to clear it.
See, that chart seems backwards to me...

Grab a framing square and you will see what 30 -45 degrees looks like.
I would have figured with the front of the shackle kicked forward (top towards front), it would be a smoother softer ride, since it can move in a natural range of motion. And with the shackle kicked backwards (top towards the back) it would be stiffer, and increase binding.
