I have beat the snot out of mine for a few years now. The quarter panel guards have taken some very hard hits with no damage. The center of the hatch on post 97 XJs will stick out ~3/8" beyond the bumper but it's nothing to worry about. Some people have added spacers to make everything flush but I prefer having it tucked up tight. Besides that, the reciever sticks out about 1/2" so nothing is going to get to the hatch any way. It's a great product that will take what you throw at it and it doesnt weigh a ton.
