question about hood vent placement

Sorry if this has already been asked...I did do a search but couldn't find anything...if there was already a thread on this, please point me to it.

Anyway, hood vents...when I did a search, I saw all shapes and sizes and placement.

So, where do you justify placing the hood vents...toward the front, back, middle, sides? Are there advantages placing the vents toward the front vs. back. Wonder which would give the better airflow?
