I'm building a set of axles for my automatic '01, and am at the point of choosing what ratio I want. Originally I thouhgt I would do 4.88s with the 35s since I had 4.56s on my last XJ with 33s, and it was ok. But, I'm thinking of going a bit deeper now.
This XJ is not a daily driver at all, but it does need to be able to make the 6+ hour drives to Moab, Durango, ect (through the mountains). I don't want to gear it too low, but don't want to feel like I should have gone a bit lower later down the road.
The axles that are going under it are a HP 44 front (haven't decided between drive flanges or locking hubs yet) and FF 60 rear (will most likely have a detroit in it). With the extra weight of the Dana 60 axle, and running a 35" tire, I was thinking a 5.13 would be a good comprimise between drivability and low gear ratio here in Colorado.
Anyone runnig a sililar tire / gear set up? How do you like it? Is it ok on the highway?
Right now I'm starting to lean toward the 5.13s, would 5.38s be way too low?
