just got one this morning outta an explorer. will i have to change the carrier out if im wanting to run like 4.88's? someone told me that the factory carrier is only for like 3.92's and down... true or false?

yup check your carrier breaks most axles have them, cept for the 8.25 which its deepest is 4.56 so i guess it doesn't matter, new carriers are like 65$ so it isn't a huge cost if your not running a carrier replacement locker (detroit arb etc....)

no carrier break on the 8.8..i just went to 5:13 on my stock carrier

Correct. In fact, none of the Ford or Ford/Sterling axles, from the 7.5" to the 10.5", have a carrier break.
