Ok I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport with inline 6 4x4 with about 67000 miles on it. The a/c will work fine sometimes and other times it will not turn on at all. Tonight I started it and let it run for 10 minutes with the air on. It rain the full 10 minutes and never cycled off, I dont know much about a/c but shouldnt the clutch have stopped or something should have clicked to turn the air off for a little while. It got so cold the windows were fogging, so I know it gets cold enough. So im thinking the coil is freezing up and not working after that. Its charged correctly according to guages, so I dont think thats it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If the cold/hot lever (under the control lever) was all the way left (cold), it might not cycle off. Did you try changing the position of that lever?

And sometimes it doesn't work at all? What happens then? Air blows but not cold, or no action at all?

According to what gauges? Who tested it? What do you mean "will not turn on"?

Are you using a full set of guages, or just a guage on the low side. If the low pressure switch is not working properly, that should be obvious looking at the guages. It's possible that you're over charged and its causing the evap to ice up.

A guage on the low side. The evap is the aluminum looking can with two hoses running to it? If it is, that thing gets super cold. Like I said dont know anything about a/c. Im trying not to take it somewhere and have them charge me something crazy and tell me its all jacked up.

You need to check both low and high sides. The can is the receiver/drier, not the evap. The evaporator is in your dash along side your heater core.

Truthfully, you need to take it to a shop. Messing with the AC in ignorance is not only dangerous to yourself, but you can really screw up the system and end up spending major $$$ to fix it.

It may simply be overcharged. They will need to evacuate the system and recharge it with the proper amount of refrigerant. Call around and get some quotes.

Sounds like your compressor is going out!! Had the same thing happen to me, dealer checked it and said compressor was goin out. I replaced it with a used one from a wrecked 98 I had layin around and now it works fine!

carlff,
read my post (a/c intermittent problems). Ive got a 99 6 cylinder auto.
I remember my technician at one point thought it maybe a low pressure switch but after checking pretty much everything he ruled it out.
I have no idea what your problem is (it may well be a low pressure switch) but you appear to have similar symtoms to what i had. Only mine would not stay on for more than 30 mins max. And then i couldnt get the a/c working again until the engine had cooled off completley.
thought id mention it anyway, I would however take it to a specialist as you sound about as up to date on a/c as me!!

Thanks for the info guys, I just dont wanna take it somewhere and get raped buy some a**h*** for 500 bucks when it could be a 25 dollar fix. Maybe I will start doing some A/C research online and see if I can find anything.
