If this XJ im looking at has a blown head gasket, what is the most reasonable worst damage/cost?

Replacing just a head gasket is easy and cheap.
But the cylinder head could very well be cracked. You'd have to take the head off and take it to a shop for inspection. Or do what I did and just get a reman head and swap it over.
And once you have the head off, you can check the condition of the cylinders.
