Insturment cluster acting funny.

I know there is a problem with the 97-01 clusters with gauges in the cluster acting funny. Temp gauge goes to to 260 when the engine is at normal temp. Volt meter goes to 9 volts even though the battery is still at 14v running. Just looking for more info on the root cause.

The pins on the panel get a little rusty and all kind of things happen.
My 99 did the same, I pulled the panel cleaned the contacts a bit, covered them with silicon insulating grease, I think it is similar to ignition wire grease and the problem went away.
Do a search, I think this subject was previously discussed.
