YATPSQ (Yet Another TPS Question)

I've searched the forums and haven't found anything specific to my particular issue.

1988 4.0L AW4 XJ 4WD

At first, it seems like a standard TPS problem. Rough engage on start, 'bouncing' shifts between low gears at lower speeds (<35 mph).

So, I figure that either the TPS is hurked or that it's gone out of adjustment.

Plugged in the multi-meter from connector "A" (+) to "D" (-).

Should be about 5 VDC, right? Nope. _15_ VDC. Yes, fifteen volts.

Pulled the connector apart and checked again. Still 15.

Just for grins, checked the "B" to "D" voltage - which is right at 12.5 VDC.

So, the _percentage_ is right, but the voltage is out of whack.

Any suggestions on what is causing the high volts?

You have the multi-meter on the wrong setting?

Check the battery with the meter. Unless your battery is putting out >15vdc, no way the TPS can be at that.

I did both. Multimeter is an "Auto-Ranger" which tested OK on the battery (12.5 VDC) and on several alkaline batteries that I had laying about.

It is "smart" enough that when I reversed the leads, it showed "negative" voltage.

I'm stumped...
