hard into reverse

hey all,
the other day while wheelin i cooked my tranny fluid and also cut a tranny cooler line. made it home with a patch on it and repaired the tube and changed the tranny fluid.

now, the tranny shifts hard into reverse most of the time. sometimes its soft but most times it slams. i kinda ignored it until last night i shifted to R and it actually barked the tires just barely.

1990 xj 4.0, aw4. lockright in rear.

when wheelin i dont shift from D to R very often. most of the time if i get hung up, i shift to N and its enough to loosen me up.

any ideas/ comments?

drain the tranny fluid and replace it with some new stuff would be where i would start
