I know this might sound silly but i just went offroading in my XJ for the first time up in the bay area! unforunatly my XJ is only 2wd, so when i came back home i did somethinking and now are asking you guys if you know of any trails that i could go to have some fun!

Pismo, Glamis, and Ocotillo have some things that can be accomplished with just 2wd. Probably could do the fire road only on Cleghorn on a good dry weekend.

Make sure you've got good recovery points and keep recovery gear, you're going to need it.

A rear locker will help you too.

Rincon shortcut in Angeles national forest can be done in 2WD. I once saw a Geo Metro on a portion of the trail (first 16 miles is washboard fire road).

Yeah there were like 3 trails I bitched out on because I knew I wasnt gonna make it should have atlease tried next time Andy !!! I just used the fire roads

I thought the same thing, he might have been able to if he was smashing the pedal through those areas... I still have my doubts :dunno:

well come the 19th you will see yourself, he was a big fan of the skinny pedal but he still did it

Hello md11fan and welcome.

To put your question back on track, check out the thread below. It has a number of links to trail-related sites that maybe useful to you. You need to follow the links, do some digging and reading, and find trails that are rated easy. You can then post up with questions on a particular trail and if it is do-able in a 2WD truck. I am sure there will be plenty of folks on here with first hand experience with any trail.

You can have a lot of fun with a 2WD Jeep. I started my wheeling days with a 2WD truck, before I moved up to a 4WD truck. It really depends on what your goals are and what kind of wheeling you think you’ll like. For trail wheeling on fire roads and such, exploring, hiking, camping, etc, your 2WD Jeep will be adequate most of the time.

You may not need the following pointers, but here they are anyways, since your profile says you are 18, just in case. I hope you don’t mind.

1) Don’t go alone. Always have another truck tag along, unless you are damn sure you will be on a trail that is well traveled and you can get help quick if you need any. It is a sinking feeling when you are stuck, or your Jeep breaks down and the last time you saw any person was hours ago. I have been there and the feeling sucks. Always let someone know where you will be.

2) Make sure your Jeep is in good mechanical condition. Be proactive on the maintenance and don’t take chances. Better yet, start wrenching on your Jeep as much as you can, and at minimum try to understand how everything works. You will learn what spare parts to carry and at least how to fix simple stuff like a blown radiator hose, and so on. A breakdown on the trails sucks for the reasons above.

3) Always be prepared with extra food, water, clothing, communication, first aid kit, basic tools, and recovery gear, as stated by others.

Good luck and have fun

Very true and if ur ever heading to Ocotillo Wells ... I know almost every inch of it and have done it all in 2 wheel drive.... Hell I used to go up Devils Slide in my 82 Ford Escort. I love the place and am always willing to go out there and have a lil fun.

Desert to beach its all offers 2wd axcess.

I take my stroked XJ 2x4 open carrier w/ 4.5" lift on 31s out all the time. Its just as fun as the big jeep, in a different way but still fun. My 2x4 XJs seen more air time than a skateboard at the X games, and will go farther than most 4x4s.
