Can any of you tell me if an older steering box will fit a 98 cherokee? Or do I need to get one out of a 98....

I believe the steering boxes are interchangeable, but the pump/resevoirs are not.

I have a box from a 90 renix cherokee in my 98. The boxes are identical as far as the exterior casting (bolt holes, fitting holes/threads, etc). The steering is way easier and feels much nicer than before. It may be because my old one was worn out, but the one I swapped in had 250k miles on it!

I don't know about the ZJ box. Look up the parts for each and compare the part numbers.

I think the ZJ box is the same, but the pitman arm has 1" more drop than the XJ arm.

otherwise a durango box will work (certain years and of course I dont remember) try searching and I think there should be something about it floating around here. I've always heard it's got a little smoother feel and turns easier because of the larger sized internals.
