i need help on sunday with my brakes, i have never done the rear drum brakes and need someone to teach them to me ( i can fab anything, build and swap engines, swap trannys but the rear brakes kick my a$$ )

i need to replace the rear passenger wheel cylender, its toast. i think i might replace the brake shoes on both sides and really want someone to help. i will buy pizza and beer for the help, please let me know asap

P.S. i am in El Cajon ( san diego )
Thanks

You wanna drive it a hundred miles? Wish I was closer to you troy, we could trade some work.

if your wheel cylinder is leaking you need to replace the brake shoes anyway, it soaks into the pad surface and ruins em.

Depends how bad...some minor leaks are not near enough to get the shoes wet.

all them lil parts are annoying .. but lay them out in order and u will be ok...
and pay attention to the springs

how is that for clarification

100 miles, for the price of gas for that trip, i could pay for the brakes to be done professionally!! :banghead: LOL...... thanks for the offer any way

just make sure you do ONE side at a time, then you always hav the other to look at for a reference. its not that hard, you can goof your way through it :D

the bitch is the 44 is spooled, no sure way to set the brakes, you might feel it start to drag a little but it might be the other side and you might still be way off. :wow:

When you tighten up the star wait until you can't wiggle the drum anymore, pull it off (should not be easy) put it back on and tighten one more click....

Viola!

troy i learned how to do drums via the chiltons manny in russ' backyard. its not that bad.

you know id be down to help but being in iraq ill be more than my usual 1 to 2 hours late.

I've done drum brakes a few times. I can come by and lend a hand.

What time are you planning on doing this?

Mike

I Always take a few pictures of the brake assembly after I remove the drum, Of both sides (they are not exact, they are mirror'd basically), and then print them out for reference.

Troy,
IMO if you have a wheel cylinder leaking, replace both of them. They are cheep.
You got good advice to do one wheel at a time. Pay attention to the order, you attach - (install) the springs on the top post. If I remember correctly, primary spring first, secondary second. Primary shoe is the first shoe past the rotation of the pin. Hope that was as clear as mud.
Guys like John that do this, chime in if I'm wrong.

also, there is a primary and secondary shoe, the pad surfaces are different lengths. match em up before you take it apart to make sure the right shoe goes in the right location.

i am pulling the jeep off the trailer at around 9 am and going from there, i will be picking up the parts on saturday to make sure i have all i need.

any one that wants to come by and help please pm me and i will send you my cell #

Thanks

Primary/secondary blah blah blah.

Big easy method...the shoe with more lining (thicker OR more surface area) goes in the rear position. Good luck.
