Ok long storry short? Bought my 01 from a shady used car lot with a bad cylinder head,. The Problem was masked with a few over the counter remidies .The jeep ran graet for about three months until it stated overheating . Looking deeper I noticed that the car lot had removeed the thermoastatit and the radiator and motor was loaded with Stop leak . I got screwed but I am tryying to make some lemonade ot of some bad lemons.
Bought an 04 motor with 36k from a local Jeep dismantler. When I had the motor out to compare, we realized that the Grand Cheorokee block is totally different and would not except the accesoors from my 01 XJ . So we exchanged the 04 motor for a correct used 01 motor.
After spending all weekend installing the motor ,it will not start. The old motor started fine and ran . After about 5-10 miniutes it would sattrt puking water into the cylinder head . The new engine turns over about 5-6 times and than sputters without starting. If this were not computer controlled I would be looking at the timing . That said I think it may be the Crank Positioning Sensor . I should have removed it from the bell housing before the engine swap. Could bumping it during the install or removal have killed it?? I pulled it out to inspect and it does look to have made contact with the Flywheel ring.
I have one ordered from Autozone ,but if this does not cure the problem ,I am at a loss. Any Ideas???
BTW While the Jeep was motorless we went ahead and installed a 4.5" lift that I scorred from Pick-N-Pull ,Half price . It is not the most expensive kit out there but for $200 bucks I got everything including Shocks .
