did some searching but to no avail. my dads trany just went out in his 97 xj and i saw one for $200 on craigslist includeing the TC, it only has 56k miles on it. so is this a direct fit or is there more to it? thanks

I think it is the same, I know the 98+ have an extra input speed sensor on the bellhouseing, you should be ok.

When I was searching for a transmission for my 01, I learned that the 97 was a stand alone year. It's different from the 96 and earlier models, but lacked the rear speed sensor on the 98-01 models. My guess is that you could swap sensors, NSS and use it, but I'm not sure.

I thought the break was 1996+ for the extra speed sensor. Don't ask how I know.

I wish... I have a 96 tranny i my 99 and its throwin code because i can't plug that sensor in.

And i do think he is right about 97 being the odd duck
