can anyone tell me how good of a rear end the chrysler 8.25" really is? I dont know much about them. I've heard they are decent for moderate tire size but I've also heard the axle shafts are smaller than those of a samurai??

it's a heck of a lot better than a d35, but not quite as good as a d44... here are the #'s...

Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89
Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01
Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some(not all) XJs equipped with towing package.

A 29 spline 8.25 (97 and up) is strong, but not quite as strong a 30 spline Dana 44. A D44 is a lot more preferable because it is non-C-clip (easier trail repair) and has MUCH better aftermarket support. If you are not crawling boulders or running 5s every weekend, an 8.25 can be built to handle 35s just fine.

A 27 spline 8.25 (96 and down) is only marginally stronger than a D35... and that is not saying much.

If you are concerned about the axle shafts, Yukon makes nice alloy ones. They're not too expensive either- should be about ~$220 for the pair. Supposedly they are 25% stronger than the stock ones, thus leaving the u-joints as the weakest link in the axle.
