4wd shift question

my friend just bought an 89xj for offroading. the guy he bought it from told him he cant shift to 4hi if he standing still, only when he is mloving. is that true? me and everyone else i offroad with do it.

i think he might be saying this due to vacuum issues

doesn't matter if you're setting still or on the move you can shift into 4HI.

You are supposed to be moving to shift. Think of a bicycle.

I think the OEM instructions say just that, he probably won't have an issue. If there is a problem shifting try it in neutral.

SPOBI.
Bicycle cogs are totally different than a t-case.I can shift on the fly or sitting still on my np231 w/5speed.A properly operating xj t-case should shift into any range while sitting still.
Make sure the tranny is in neutral before attempting to shift...
