AW4 stays in 1st when 1/2 position?

My trans works fine and have absolutly no problems with it. However, I noticed on a hill it wouldn't shift into 2nd gear when I had the shifter in the first/second position. When I put it into 3rd or OD, it works fine. Shouldn't it shift into second or am I missing something here? If it should be, where/how should I start to troubleshoot the problem? Thanks for letting me pick your collective brains aperwork. This one has me stumped!

Edit: Sorry, it's a "94, 4.0, 155,000 miles.

It'll shift into second, but not until almost redline.

Wow, Redline huh? wouldn't think you'd have to go that high. I'll try it tomorrow (or blow it up in the process :explosion) and report back. Thanks for the info. guys. Redline, who'd a thought. What was the thinking behind that, I wonder?

Makes sense when you put it that way. Since 1st and 2nd are combined, you'd want a high shift point. Thanks for the insight!
