Undercarriage guard - necessary?

It took me a while to figure out what this thing was actually called

Anyways, this is what I'm talking about:

Mine is ripped in several spots and hangs low, is this thing necessary or can I remove it completely?

You don't need it. It does keep the alternator cleaner and the belt cleaner and drier as well as keep debris from kicking up into the bay as much, but as many times as i was under my XJ I got tired of it and removed it. It was beginning to fall apart anyway.
If you have the cash, get an engine skid and it will do the above as well as actually protect your junk too.

Ha, didn't even know XJs came with one. Mine certainly doesn't have it.

If it doesn't bolt on it will be gone in a heartbeat. Put the money in the skid plate.

haha i remember that nasty thing when i bought my 90. one of the first "mods" done was ripping that thing off .:laugh2:
