99 TJ engine vs. 99 XJ engine.

Hi all,

It's been a while since posting on here, I guess it's because my old 92 XJ has been that reliable! Anyway, I recently sold her but didn't waste any time in replacing it with a 99 XJ. The engine in the one I just bought I believe is pretty well shot and I bought a salvage yard 1999 TJ (Wrangler) engine to swap into it. The horsepower ratings on the TJ engine is 181 HP vs. the 190 HP on the XJ. Does anyone know why???? Thanks.

IIRC, the TJ didn't get the larger intake manifold that the XJ picked up in '99. There are also exhaust differences that may be a factor.

I plan on using my intake manifold on the TJ engine, so I guess this won't be an issue......any more details on the exhaust differences?

pretty sure the pully routing/locations are different. TJ only has one cooling fan...

Geez...I was told this was the same engine! I hope I don't have to go swapping a bunch of things around.......!

AFAIK the HP ratings were due to different exhaust routings. Like said above, same engine, just a few accessories are mounted a little differently. If you've got the both of them, you should be all set for the swap.

Yep, I have both. My engine is still in the cherokee, pulling it this weekend......had me worried for a minute there! I had planned on sitting my cherokee engine next to the TJ engine and comparing the differences anyway, but this info definitely helps to know ahead of time! Thanks for the input guys........

Good deal! I have a new polished stainless steel header I am putting on as well. I had already planned on using my intake with the new header. Thanks for the input.

Take the valve covers off and compare the casting numbers on the head. They should be 0630.

TJ's have a squarish radiator in the center where the XJ has a short wide radiator so the positioning of the fan has to work around that.
Your best bet is to swap all exterior accessories and manifolds from the old XJ motor to the TJ.
Also X2 on what was said in an earlier post about swapping water pumps - the one on the XJ turns in the opposite direction from the crank because it's turned by the back side of the belt. If the TJ has a grooved pulley on the water pump then it's turning the same direction as the crank.

Here's a table of head and block casting numbers from 5-90

Heads first, blocks second:
Year............Casting No
1987-90......2686
1991-95......7120
1996-99......0630
2000-01......0331

Year............Casting No. ...........................Part No.
1987...........53005535 (8933002665)....83503400
1988-90.....53005535 (8933002665)....83505110
1991...........53008405........................... ...4626155
1992...........53008405........................... ...4638959
1993...........53008405........................... ...4728988
1994-95......53008405.............................47788 82
1996-99......53020569.............................48830 25
2000-01......53010449AA.......................5013166AB

This is from this web site. One of the best places on the web for xj motor info. This should be plenty for you to figure it out with, although you may need a serious power wash to find the casting numbers.
