xj problems

Ive got a 86 xj with the 2.8 tf409 selec trac either np229/228

When i engage 4 hi all i get is a very loud noise, hard to explain, not really a grinding noise. and it will not move.

It will how ever move in 4lo, no matter if the selec trac is in 2wd or 4wd.

When its in 4 hi it will roll foward, when its in 4lo it will not.

could it be the rear end out of it?

Which is it? It sounds more like a transfer case problem.

If it drives in 2wd as your post indicates, then it's not a rear-axle problem.

Your transmission should be a Torqueflight 904 (TF904 or 904LU)

yeah i figured the guy at the dealership had no idea what he was talking about.

When its at idle in park and in 4 hi it will roll foward, i put it in 4lo and it will not do this.

Im not very knowledgeable about the selec trac, i assume the 2wd or 4wd option, means 2wd is still 4wd but its not locked, and 4wd it locks. Then the lever puts it in either hi or lo range?

I also thought it might be the tc, seems like its the v.c.??
