IH Scout Dana 44s to an XJ???

Hey all, I just bought a 1995 XJ Sport this afternoon. Has a 4" lift with 32" tires right now. I have had a 1976 Scout Traveler sitting in my yard for about a year with not a clue what to do with it. I've heard that IH built some of the most bullet proof Dana 44s out there and was wondering, how hard would it be to mount both axles under the XJ? Chances are I would have the local 4x4 specialist do it, as I am not very suspension/axle savy. Thanks.

IIRC, Cherokees are a driver's side drop, IH Scouts are passenger side drop. Meaning the diffs are on different sides. So it would not work. Again, if my memory serves me, Ford axles are the only ones that you can use in XJ's because GM and Dodge are pass. drop.

A D300 swap would be most economical I think. I think the real problem is that you might have to rotate the knuckles and add all the CA brackets. I would hold out for a EB D44 and go with radius arms for cheap swapping in.

What is "EB" ?

Wow, never even thought about the passenger side drop**lol** Thanks. I'll try and find something a little beefier. Probably take a bit though :D

Its too bad the Scout stuff doesn't work or I'd already have them in mine. I have a 72 parts scout with D44's front and rear, and came from the factory with lockers, and 4.56's. That would be a perfect swap. It was originally a plow truck.

Unless that old scout is trashed you could restore it and raffle it off. The guy across the street from us did this with a CJ5. His current project is an 14 ft air stream trailer.

So, I just thought of something as well. I couldn't swap the front axle from the scout, but I could swap the back D44 if needed? Housing is right in the center aint it? I like the D300 idea. Unfortunately, not what mine has; I don't think :) I do think it would be easier to find a D300 and swap them than to wait around for a EB D44. That way, from what I understand, I could get the front D44 off my scout as well.
As for my TCase in the scout, I believe it TC-143
Also, the scout is trashed (floor boards shot, gas take is done, engine rebuilt needed, etc.) Which is why I'm trying to salvage the axles and probably take the engine/tranny and T-Case out anyway, then just donate the metal to the steel shop here.

You sure can use the rear axle. The bolt pattern is different and about 58" wide, so just get 1" wheel spacers that have the bolt pattern converted to the XJ pattern and you'll be set. I have the same type of axle on mine and I love it.

Yeah, I noticed that when I eyed the axles up to my scout. Scout ones are a little narrow :) At least that'll give me the option to put some lockers on the rear with no fear of breaking something. Once I get the cash for the shop to do it, that's what I'll do. Also considering that D300 swap but not sure what would be better or cheaper. I'm sure the D300 with D44s would be better, but finding a ford housing and keeping the same TC may be cheaper.

Quick point on the Early Bronco front axle: the diff. is almost exactly CENTERED under the motor, so a decent lift is almost mandatory to be able to use it,and not take out the oil pan. I have one laying in my yard, and this is why it is STILL laying in my yard. I may still use it, if I ever strech the nose of my Jeep. ( However, the EB D-20 X-case and NP-435 might still sneak in....)
