Don't know about mud, but they work great in snow.

i had a set of 30's. great for snow, rock, mud and sand. on ice and slush they suck. they are pretty hard and loud and wear ok. i got about 30k out of em. just keep rotating them. pretty sure they are 2 ply. i know they're not 6 ply. i never had any problems with the sidewalls even when running at 10 psi.

A friend of mine has them on his XJ. He slices a sidewall almost every time he goes out. He bought them at Sam's Club and they have been replacing them under the Road Hazard warranty.
