How the heck do you remove the roof cross bars?

OK, I did a search and found a thread on this from the middle of last year or so, but it didn't include pictures. I'm assuming this can't be that hard to do, but I want to remove my factory roof rails so I can put my roof rack on, but I can't figure out how to get the back endcaps to come off so I can slide the rails off. Does anyone have any pics of this or detailed instructions?

I even did a google search and didn't find what I was looking for.

torx bit, just loosen the bolt. those plastic caps just slide out. try pulling up slightly on the metal track. hope it helps.

you can also pop them off...slide a flat head screw driver into the part that slides and hit it lightly with a hammer until it pops off. i dont know how the rails differ with years, but it worked on my 2001.
