i've read in different places that you should only use the atf+3 or atf+4 but i've also read in other places that you should use dex/merc. What gives???

dexron/ mercon III for the aw4. Just because its in a mopar does not mean that it is a mopar transmission. Its actually a Toyota trans.

I just spent the last half hour doing some research. It turns out the aw4 is actuall a japanese tranny (jerseyjeepo1, you are correct) and it was designed to use the dex...thanks.

It doesn't matter what tranny fluid you use in the tc. I use the same fluid as the tranny so you dont accidentally put the wrong stuff in the trans.

dex works just fine in the 231.

For those reading this thread and were wondering the answer is YES 242s also use Dex II or III. You are welcome for the contribution.
